How to find the cheapest flight

You’re planning to go on a citytrip or just chill out on a tropical beach but the price of the plane ticket is unaffordable. Don’t postpone or cancel your trip. Just try these tips and save more money for your vacation instead of spending it all before you even reached your destination.

-> Skyscanner.net. This website is my bible to find the perfect flight. What makes it different from other flight comparison websites is that you don’t have to enter a specific date or destination. This way you can easily find where to and when the cheapest flights are. On skyscanner you can also set a price alert which warns you if the prices go up of go down.

-> Be flexible in time. Flights during low-season and weekdays are always cheaper. The best days to fly are usually from Monday till Thursday. The price can also vary for morning or evening flights.

-> Be flexible in destination. For airlines it’s sometimes cheaper to go to a smaller airport a bit further away from the big city or the big international airport. Examples are Charleroi instead of Brussels (Belgium) or Pisa instead of Florence (Italy). Watch out with this one though because if it’s more expensive to get to your destination or if it takes way more time it might not be worth it.

-> Book in advance. The earlier you book the better. Try to book at least one month in advance. Sometimes you might have a promotion or last minute deal but don’t count too much on it if you wanna be sure of your spot.

-> Go to the original website. When you see a deal online or you’ve found a flight on a site such as skyscanner.com, cheaptickets.com, ebookers.com, google flight,… Always go to the site of the airline itself and see if the price is lower there. Also do this when you want to book a hotel or hostel on booking.com, hostelworld, tripadvisor,… The prices can vary on the different search engines or be cheaper on the website of the hotel/hostel itself.

-> Delete your search history. Have you ever noticed that when you’re booking flights, the price suddenly raises? This is because they developed a system where they can track you’re searches so they can quickly raise the price. Delete your search history and cookies before booking or if possible use another computer when you know which flight you want.

-> Fly with low cost airlines such as ryanair, easyjet, vueling,… Don’t care too much about leg space or service if you wanna fly cheap. Especially if you have only hand luggage this is a good option. Just make sure you spell your name right, read the terms & conditions and look up in advance if you need a passport or ID.

-> Limit your luggage. You can bring a small suitcase as hand luggage. For city trips or short vacations try to fit all your stuff in here. An extra suitcase can cost a lot more money. For hand luggage the weight is less important (usually 10kilo) but if your big suitcase is gonna be too heavy, pay for it at least 5 days in advance on line. If you discover that you have excess baggage on the airport it’s not going to be a nice surprise. Another option, when you’re staying somewhere for a long time, is to send your luggage. I’ve done this through…. It’s not expensive and they pick up and deliver your suitcase at your doorstep.

Good luck and have a nice flight!

  1. Great tips. Like that, booking easy flights is actually very easy. I’d also recommend to book on wednesday evenings. Flights are usually the cheapest at this time of the week!
